Fonts from issue 4

So sorry it's taken us a while to get round to this, folks! Here, at last, are the typefaces chosen as favourites by our interviews in issue #4. As always, we have links through to foundry websites, should you wish to buy the fonts. In some cases, we get a small kick-back if you buy fonts using our links, with no extra cost to you.

A teaser of artwork print #2

It's been a busy few months lately and immediately after the release of issue three, we set to work on putting issue four into production. However, today we're happy to announce that we'll very shortly be releasing the second in our series of artwork prints. Here's a sneak peek:

Any guesses on who the artist is? Let us know by mentioning @8faces on Twitter or writing on the wall of our brand new Facebook page!

8 Faces #3: sorry about the delay

Hello, folks!

This is just a quick update to apologise for the delay in sending out your copy (or copies) of 8 Faces #3. They were meant to ship last week, but due to a defect with the paper stock (a problem arising from the actual paper supplier, not our wonderful printer, I should add), we’ve had to get several sheets re-done and naturally this has had an impact on everything else.

In all honesty, we *could* have shipped, but I wasn’t happy with the results: the error had caused the colour to appear very slightly different between the left and right pages, which was especially noticeable on the big double-page spreads designed by Jon. I pride myself on publishing a magazine that is the absolute best it possibly could be — after all, that’s what you paid for — so I hope you’ll agree that this was the right decision to make.

Our printer / distributor has informed me that all orders should ship from their warehouse next Thursday, the 15th.

Thanks so much for your patience,

~ Elliot Jay Stocks, Editor

Fonts from Issue 3

Every issue we ask each interviewee which eight typefaces they couldn't live without, and now we're publishing those in one handy list on the blog... complete with links through to foundry websites, should you wish to buy the fonts and use them in your own projects. And why wouldn't you? They're fine choices, after all.

Here are the selections from issue three. We haven't added links to typefaces that don't have digital equivalents, aren't available commercially (such as in-progress faces or those that are specially commissioned), and of course system fonts like Georgia and Verdana.

The artwork prints are here

After a slightly delay to our original schedule (sorry about that, folks!), we're happy to announce the arrival of our long-awaited, limited edition A3 (297mm x 420mm) artwork prints. You can buy the first one (or pre-order all eight) at 8faces.com.

Print #1 was designed by David Bŕezina using his own typeface Skolar and is a logical next step from the promotional poster he designed for Type Together when Skolar was released. We'll be interviewing David soon about his thinking behind the print's design.

In terms of production values, the 8 Faces prints are as high in quality as the magazine: they're printed on 350gsm stock with luminous ink, a matte velvet laminate (which feels lovely!), spot varnishing on the large type, and a hand-embossed 8 Faces stamp. They're pretty special.

Each print will be available (while stocks last, of course) for just £19. If you pre-order the entire series, which we'll release over the course of a year, you get a big reduction: £99 instead of £152.

The prints will ship in sturdy cardboard tubes during the week commencing 11th July.

Limited edition prints

Very shortly, we will be releasing a very special set of eight prints, each one designed by a different artist! You will be able to pre-order all eight at a discounted price to make sure you get the full collection, or order prints separately as they are released throughout the year.

Each one will be printed on A3, matte laminated, heavy uncoated stock, with spot varnish coating. All prints will be individually numbered and hand-embossed with an 8 Faces stamp. Most importantly, there will only be 100 copies printed of each.

These are super limited editions — there will be no reprints!

Details coming very soon.

8 Faces in the shops

We’ve got some big news to announce: 8 Faces #2 is now in the shops!

8faces-in-the-shops.jpg

Although we’ve sold out of our online allocation, we kept several copies back for the purpose of placing them in physical retail stores. In other words: this lot are still part of the original, limited edition run of 3000. If you didn’t manage to get hold of a copy from our site, now is your chance... in meatspace!

The magazine is in stock right now at Here Gallery (directly below our offices at Mild Bunch HQ in Bristol), and it’s being stocked from Monday 17th onwards by Magma Books (in all three of their stores across London and Manchester), and The Arnolfini Bookshop (also in Bristol).

Yes, sadly we’re limited to the UK at the moment, but we’re planning to expand further afield with #3. If you’re a shop and you’re interested in stocking the magazine, please get in touch.

Win a copy of Fonts in Focus magazine

Our friends at Linotype have given us four copies of the latest Fonts In Focus (#7) to give away to 8 Faces readers. The magazine is beautiful — it has a very fancy double cover with some lovely thick card stock, and it's bound using staples that fit into a ring binder, just like on the Typotheque type catalogue we bundled with issue two of 8 Faces.

To be in with a chance of winning Fonts In Focus #7, all you have to do is mention @8faces on Twitter and use the hashtag #fontsinfocus, telling us why you'd like one. The four best answers will be picked on Monday 17th January and once we've contacted the winners for their details, we'll send the copies out shortly afterwards.

Last chance to get #2

Today is the last chance to buy a copy of issue two from our online shop, as we'll be switching over to the PDF version first thing tomorrow morning.

There are still a few copies left, but once the online shop has been closed, any remaining copies will be sent to the physical retail shops for them to sell (more details on which shops coming soon). The reason we've decided to do this before selling out entirely is that it makes fulfilment easier for us, since it works better to ship bulk quantities than the odd order here and there.

We're also talking to another online retailer about selling copies through them, although that's likely to start in the new year. The bottom line: if you haven't yet ordered a copy of issue two, doing so today is your best bet of getting one!

Shipping soon!

The printing of issue two is going well and we're hoping to start shipping internationally by the end of this week. The majority of orders will ship next week, but we're hoping to get the 'further away' orders (i.e: those going to places like Australia and Asia) out this week so that they arrive in time for Christmas.
